Soundproofing VS Acoustic Treatment

Soundproofing and Acoustic Treatment are techniques for varying the sound in a room both are used for different purposes and produce very different results. To know which one suits your needs, check out the general uses of each.

Soundproofing

The purpose of soundproofing is to prevent much possible noise from either entering or leaving a room. This is most widely used for nurseries, musical areas, media rooms, and other similar spaces.

  • Keys to soundproofing a room include:

Adding Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) to the walls to reduce the vibration caused by sound waves.
This is most effectively done during the construction phase, but can be achieved in an already existing room with the help of materials like mass loaded vinyl.

1. Using isolation products around the room for further reduce sound.

Door and window seals, coating and adhesive, rubber decouplers, acoustic sound barriers, and even acoustic caulk (a waterproof filler and sealant) are just some of the isolation products available to stop noise leakage.

2. Blocking Windows

Windows are a major source of sound leakage, so they must be addressed in your soundproofing efforts. For existing rooms, either double-glaze the glass (making sure the seals are airtight) or fill the window space with sandbags across the whole thing. This step should obviously be avoided if natural light is needed or desired.

  • Acoustic Treatment

Acoustic Treatment is a process of placing materials in a room to enhance the sound quality as understand by listeners within the space. This is most widely used in recording studios where sound can drastically interfere with output quality.

  • Keys to acoustic treatment include:

1. Using acoustic foam to cover the walls

Industry experts recommend at least 50 – 75% coverage for musical styles that involve varying sound waves, such as rock and pop

2. Placing foam isolation pads under monitors and speakers

Isolation pads serve as a barrier between speakers, monitors, and mounting surfaces. This reduces vibration and secondary noise, which in turn improves sound clarity.

3. Experimenting with acoustic panels, bass traps and different speaker

There are so many factors contribute to a room’s acoustical output you just needed to hit on the perfect formula on the first try. As a result, it’s important to be enthusiastic to experiment with different foam accessories, sound equipment, and placement until you get the sound you want.
